About Us

We distribute books and book-ish supplies to underserved communities, specifically through organizing book drives and literary events focused on children with medical needs. Butterfly Books proudly partners with our community’s hospitals and medical centers to create our Little Libraries: cabinets of books freely available for children of all ages to borrow, read, and return or keep.

What We Do

Our central initiative is our events, wherein we offer each attendee a book of their own to spread literacy to homes that often do not have access. We also lead crafts to get kids excited about reading, including painting, drawing and decoration activities. The libraries we offer become epicenters of academic and social connection for all children who experience them and are an invaluable asset to any youth-focused community, especially those that cannot afford to purchase their own literature. Our mission also includes providing individualized resources for each child receiving care from our partners. To support this initiative, we began our Book Bundles program, which centers around providing our partners with box sets of books and book-ish supplies to distribute individually, based on personal literary preferences. We rely on book donations to fund and supply our cause, through both direct donation and the income provided by our partner entity, HookedonBooks!. HookedonBooks! sells new and used books on Amazon, reaching a wide audience of consumers and donating 100% of its revenue to our cause.

Our mission is to promote literacy for children in underprivileged communities and children with medical needs by providing complimentary books through the distribution of care packages, the establishment of little libraries in medical institutions and community centers, and other book distribution methods.

  • Our Vision and Values

We believe that education is a fundamental human right, and that the resource of books is critical to grow children’s minds, hearts, and souls. We endeavor to defend this right, and provide underserved communities with literary resources at no charge to them. Spreading diverse perspectives, so that each child feels represented and connected to literature, is a mission we strive to uphold in everything we do, and thus we aim to provide children with books from a plethora of authors with diverse backgrounds and life experiences. A book is a window into the world, and every child deserves to see as much as possible.

Our History

Butterfly Books had its roots in the dreams of a 13-year-old literature enthusiast, who, amidst the cozy confines of her pink-filled bedroom, envisioned sharing her passion with the world. Fast forward to 2020: in the midst of a global pandemic, our Founder Lucia, established HookedonBooks!, an Amazon Pro-Seller account, and began selling books from her personal collection. Lucia was committed to donating 100% of the profits to various charities, with the largest early contribution going to the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF).

As Lucia’s journey progressed, she began accepting book donations from a network of supporters, including family, friends, teachers, and neighbors, to amplify her impact. Her colorful daily book displays on Instagram drew a growing audience, and the idea of something more significant took shape.

In the fall of 2022, Lucia and her close friend Sydney, now our Vice President, envisioned expanding the mission of Butterfly Books. Lucia's vision was clear: promoting literacy for children. Thus, in March of 2023, Butterfly Books was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Lucia and Sydney sprang into action, embarking on a journey of rebranding, meticulous planning, and recruitment, ushering in a new era of our nonprofit's mission and impact. Going forward, HookedonBooks! will donate all profits from sales to Butterfly Books.
